Understand the path from your device to the internet

Home internet and Wi‑Fi, explained as one connected system

Your internet plan, modem or fiber terminal, router, Ethernet, Wi‑Fi access point and devices all affect the experience — but they do different jobs. This site separates those layers so speed, coverage and connection problems make more sense.

The key distinction

Wi‑Fi is your local wireless link — not the internet itself

A device can have excellent Wi‑Fi signal while the internet connection is slow, or a fast internet plan while one room has weak Wi‑Fi. Troubleshooting becomes easier when you test each layer separately.

ISP connectionThe link between your home and your internet provider.
GatewayModem, ONT and/or router that terminates the service and routes local traffic.
Local networkEthernet switches and Wi‑Fi access points connect devices inside the home.
Radio environmentDistance, walls, interference, channel use and device capability shape Wi‑Fi performance.
Application pathThe remote server, wider internet route and application can also limit performance.
